Inspection

As part of our commitment to quality, Microkerf utilises a wide range of measuring and inspection equipment and technologies to verify the parts we produce.

The Mitutoyo PJ-3000 profile projector provides highly accurate digital measurements of linear, angular, and surface profiles for smaller parts. Micrometres, vernier callipers, height gauges, various slip gauges, pin gauges, and other instruments are calibrated and maintained in accordance with ISO 9001 requirements. Our quality procedures are designed to measure and record inspection results, enabling us to reduce scrap and non-conformances.

Microkerf offers a comprehensive solution for all metallographic preparation requirements. Our equipment allows users to accurately reveal the microstructure of their materials for microscopic analysis. The Nikon microscope provides digital images of weld sections and surfaces, establishing weld penetration depths and levels of porosity, which can be archived as JPEG files. Having this facility in-house allows us to quickly obtain information and make improvements to our process parameters efficiently.

The IsoMet 1000 Precision saw is the first step in quality sample preparation, ensuring no structural damage or defects are introduced to the area under analysis. After sectioning the specimen, embedding is typically the next step. This process is performed for various reasons, including protecting edges, supporting porous and friable materials, and facilitating easier handling of components. Additionally, embedding ensures the specimen can be handled safely.

The Buehler Beta grinder-polisher with Vector power head prepares the sample for subsequent etching and image capture.

Small laser-drilled holes are routinely measured using pin gauges and the shadow graph, although both methods have limitations due to the trumpet-shaped section profile of the holes. Alternatively, for flow-based applications such as nozzles, we inspect the flow after laser drilling using Uson Qualitek 622 and Furness Controls FCO752 Flow Meters.
